The moral of the story.
In a recent news story about a local prostitution arrest, one of the comments was something to the effect of ‘aside from being against god’s law, what’s wrong with it?’
The concept of morality often comes up in discussions of “the hobby.” Is paying for sex moral? Are the people who buy (or sell) sex immoral for doing so? Are anti-prostitution crusaders just trying to impose their morality on the rest of us?
It astounds me sometimes to see guys who spend huge chunks of time and effort chatting online with hookers waxing philosophical about the existence of god.
How odd that people who think it’s perfectly acceptable to make a “hobby” out of fucking hookers also profess to follow the moral codes of organized religion.
On January 12, 2010, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale rocked the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Schools collapsed. Hospitals collapsed. The Presidential Palace collapsed. The death toll in that impoverished nation could be in the thousands, the tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands. Corpses line the streets. Cries for help can still be heard from those trapped beneath the rubble. Almost immediately, a world wide relief effort was mobilized. People from all over the world were moved to take action by this horrible tragedy. Aid and charity organizations marshalled every available resource.
And amidst this almost unimaginable human suffering, those who style themselves as the most moral of us wasted no time in using this disaster for their own twisted political and religious (and profitable) motives. Right wing politicians and commentators, those who presume to dictate whom we can marry, who we can fuck and what a woman can do with her own body have lashed out at relief efforts. Some have gone so far as to suggest that we not donate to relief agencies because Americans should not be sending money to help in this time of unparalleled need.
Those who are supposed to be the pillars of morality in our society, who claim to have the ear of god himself when they issue their very public prayers have made the most despicable statements, blaming the victims of this natural disaster, saying they deserve to suffer and die because of a supposed pact with the devil.
And while those beacons of morality, sanctity and virtue are profiting from the hatred they spew, those whom society considers among the least moral and virtuous have been quick to offer help and support. Hookers, strippers and porn stars, using their Twitter, blogs and Tumblrs have been raising money, helping put people in touch with missing loved ones and encouraging other to get involved in the humanitarian efforts. Some have even found more creative ways to raise money for charity.
Whether it’s advocating for gay rights, reproductive rights or sex worker’s rights, the whores and sluts are more often likely to follow the scriptural admonition, “whatever you do for the least of your brothers and sisters, you do for me.”
I’m not usually reticent to harangue my fellow whore-fuckers for their lack of social graces. But in a situation like this, most of us don’t have the advantage of a suitable platform from which to call others to action. A message board forum post can get lost in the clutter of ads, whines and flirts. And most of us are smart enough not have have blogs our wives could find. Since I do have this little slice of the virtual universe, I want to encourage my 2 or 3 loyal readers to participate in any way you can to bring much needed help to the people of Haiti. Volunteer, donate what you can, and spread the word to others to join in.
